Positioning People, Places and Things
A decade ago, advanced feature phone makers began to partner with mobile network operators and use cell triangulation to estmate a device's position, then to include GPS receivers in some models. The Location-Based Services industry was born. LBS revenues in 2010 were an estmiated $2.8 billion. With the advent of smartphones the penetration of locating technologies expanded and LBS grew mainstream. Since 2011 mobile developers have systematically found ways to leverage user position information in their applications and services. Value and revenues based on knowing the users' GPS-determined coordinates reached $4.4 billion in 2012.
Today, GPS-based LBS make up the vast majority of this revenue, however, to continue growth and meet the rising demands of users for more sophisticated and precise services, currently deployed technologies fail.
This is the decade of precise positioning technologies.
In research and prototype for several years, relying on an ever-expanding deployment of digital infrastructures, new technology options for quickly, inexpensively, reliably and accurately determing the position of users, their surroundings and objects are emerging.
This is a VERY HOT segment of the information technology industry upon which many future new services will build. Vendors are making claims, acquisitions are making headlines and confusion is rampant.
A tidal wave of new products and services for positioning will soon hit the market. If you or your company wish to generate new revenues or increase your growth rate from this trend, review the professional services we offer and contact us for a consultation.
