The Indoor Positioning and Navigation Testbed described on this portal is a unique opportunity for the emerging Indoor Position ecosystem to assess technology readiness/maturity, on the one hand, and the real world needs (and conditions) of customers on the other.
Conducting the testbed will benefit all stakeholders of the ecosystem:
- providers of indoor positioning and navigation "core enabling technologies,"
- developers and providers of solutions, devices and services that will license or purchase and incorporate one or more of the core enabling technologies from the segment above,
- developers, providers and deployers/integrators of solutions that will build and sell applications or services based upon accurate indoor positioning using the above,
- owners of large venues and their customers, i.e., the businesses who use space in those venues, and
- public service providers (e.g., public safety, emergency response) and their partners (e.g., providers/managers of public transportation systems, parking facilities)
Recognizing that they are important representatives of the fourth group in the ecosystem, the Fira of Barcelona and GSMA are hosting the testbed.
Why Sponsor?
We are seeking financial support from businesses and/or organizations who are in any of the remaining stakeholder groups to underwrite the costs of the testbed.
In addition to the positive brand image which will result directly from association with the GSMA, Fira of Barcelona and this important industry initiative, the motivations for sponsoring and the potential impacts of this testbed's success vary with the segment.
Stakeholder/Ecosystem Segment | Motivation | Potential Impact |
---|---|---|
Providers of Core Enablers | to evaluate the performance of their own enabling technology in a real world testbed in a manner that permits comparison with alternative technologies or implementations of the same approaches | justify further investments in specific areas, identify differentiator not previously quantified, establish value proposition to customers |
Integrators of Core Enablers (devices) and infrastructure providers | to evaluate performance of existing and emerging systems in carefully controlled and rigorously measured scenarios | in addition to the same benefits as above, perhaps, explore alternative core enablers for popular use cases, discover/evaluate new suppliers of core enabling technologies |
Builders of Indoor Solutions/Services | to evaluate performance of existing and emerging systems in carefully controlled and rigorously measured scenarios | choose new suppliers, delay or accelerate go-to-market plans, develop multi-threaded strategies for positioning |
Public Sector and Partners | to evaluate performance of existing and emerging systems in carefully controlled and rigorously measured scenarios | justify timelines for new mandates on accuracy, justify budget planning for deployments of infrastructure in urban settings for citizens |
Sponsorship Levels and Benefits
The testbed management seeks to secure at least €40,000 in contributions from sponsors in order to cover all fixed costs of the testbed management as well as, potentially, to defray the variable costs of startups and academic group entries.
Level | Donation | Benefits |
---|---|---|
Gold | €20,000 |

The goal is to secure the testbed sponsor support on or before the official launch of the testbed. If the sponsorship goals are not met, the testbed will be postponed. Alternatively, participation fee may be calculated to distribute the cost of the testbed evenly across all participating entities. The fee for participating entities will be announced at the launch of the phase one communications.
Communication Plan
The first Indoor Positioning and Navigation Testbed will be promoted to industry via multiple communication channels in two phases with different objectives.
Phase One
During the months of September, October and November 2012 the goal of all communications will be to sign up ten participating entities who wish to use the testbed to evaluate one or more technologies or solutions. To reach our objective will require making all providers of core enabling technologies, device providers, infrastructure and service providers and indoor position research groups aware of the testbed's highly-targeted goals and potential impacts on their futures.
There will be numerous posts on popular blogs and relevant industry portals, announcements published to professional mailing lists and at industry events, and outreach directly to the target audiences.
Hosting organizations and sponsors' visions for the future of mobile indoor positioning and navigation for their businesses and the opportunities for new societal and commercial impacts will feature prominently in this campaign.
We will also promote the testbed's esteemed scientific advisory committee which is responsible for the testbed design.
Phase Two
Following the testbed, during December, the focus of the campaign is to inform stakeholders of the indoor positioning and navigation ecosystem that the testbed took place and learnings about the methodology/approach. Hosting organizations and sponsors will be able to promote their role, vision and any upcoming events, products, services or strategies with respect to indoor-based services.
The names of participating entities and the results of the testbed will not be disclosed as part of testbed communications unless there is unanimous agreement by participating entities on terms and conditions.
