Knowledge about and understanding of the approaches to interoperability is crucial to reducing existing obstacles to the study, integration and future adoption of Augmented Reality as a means to visualize information in the real world context. One of the approaches to increase interoperability is to implement in software or to encode data using one or more standards.
There are many ongoing and emerging initiatives in international Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) and industry groups to specify standards for these purposes.
In this tutorial, attendees will learn:
- Why interoperability is an achievable goal with numerous benefits,
- Approaches from which to choose when components or projects need to be interoperable,
- The current status of standards organizations and initiatives that can be adopted for AR intereoperability,
- How to prioritize where to invest efforts to support for interoperability through open source projects and standards, and
- How to use interoperability tools in a project.
Target Audiences
All researchers and developers of AR-enabling technologies, components and solutions seeking to test performance of innovations in real world contexts can benefit from greater knowledge about interoperability. Those studying the usability and adoption of AR by integrating novel and proven AR experiences into existing in pilot or large scale deployments will also benefit from learning about (and using) open source libraries and international standards.
