Workshop on ‘Advanced Manufacturing with Augmented Reality’
While there is potential for improving the quality of human-assisted processes, manufacturing research focuses heavily on the use of robotics. This further increases demands on humans needed to setup, configure, and operate highly sophisticated manufacturing systems.
Augmented Reality has the potential to significantly increase operational efficiency, add value, and reduce error in manufacturing. AR in manufacturing is of interest across many sectors and businesses, with more and more successful case studies being reported.
The Needs
There is great diversity in manufacturing. As a result, the requirements for precision and potential for automation and guided reproduction vary widely.
Unfortunately, there is little or no opportunity for those who are working independently at the cutting edge of the field to share their views with others. As a result of the absence of a central group or committee to provide a status report, there is no holistic, detailed and current view.
Workshop Goals
This workshop convenes those in industry and in academia who work on the AR in manufacturing to develop an assessment of current activity. Furthermore, through the invited speakers and the participant collaboration, this workshop will develop a set of recommended research topics and projects.
The focus of the workshop and its themes are among the most important areas of development in industrial AR today:
● Shop Floor Environment
● Quality Inspection
● Technical Data Delivery
Outcomes
This workshop will increase awareness of the current state of the art in industry on the three highlighted themes above and develop the most advanced research agenda for AR in manufacturing.
Experts and participants will document the current state of the art and propose nine research areas that can become the basis for academic and public/private partnership-funded research projects. Those who participate in the workshop will be best placed to develop groundbreaking research projects based on the most challenging problems. By developing agreement among those in the field, the workshop will help to focus funding and other resources on the short and long-term research topics.
Workshop co-chairs are currently in the process of negotiating terms for releasing the workshop results with suitable publishers. Further details to be announced.
