Guidelines

We seek to stimulate the design and implementation of new services that reach beyond simple map-based outdoor navigation to points of interest.

We highly encourage individuals, academic institutions and companies to develop and showcase their innovation and talents in this showcase.

For example:

  • use a mobile device to capture (digitally map) the immediate surroundings in 3D in real time
  • use observations from a network of air quality sensors to show the citizen the current air quality conditions at the user’s location
  • use observations from any publicly-accessible connected sensors to show current conditions at the user’s location
  • use 3D topographical models of the Geneva city center to show (overlaying on the real world) how water flows from higher areas into the lake during rain storms
  • use 3D city and topographical models to show how wind moves through the city (overlaying on the real world)
  • use historical and forecast meteorological data to “see” the direction and force of wind and/or the impacts of a violent storm
  • show the pipes and infrastructure below the streets
  • use city data to hunt “treasure” or find hidden geospatially-referenced geo data (a game) and to earn points which are shown on a leaderboard
  • use water circulation and temperature data for Lake Geneva to show the circulation patterns below the lake surface
  • use air traffic data to show the origin and destination of airplanes flying over Geneva and the lake
  • use building roof data to show which buildings in Geneva are best suited to collect solar power

Participation in this showcase permits the integration of new mobile technology with data sets specific to the center of the city of Geneva. Developers should assume these experiences will be demonstrated using off-the-shelf mobile Android platforms including tablets and smartphones. Alternatives, such as special hardware for showcase event purposes, are welcome but cannot be provided by the showcase.

The use of open Application Programming Interfaces, open standards for data management and use, and Open Source projects are highly encouraged, but projects based on proprietary technology are also welcome. We will provide access from showcase event devices to the Internet via high speed mobile network access points during the event, thereby enabling easy and free access to any cloud-based data sets or services.

A description of the target audiences for the Showcase event appears on the showcase event invited guests page and may help in orienting your ideas and investments.

The deadline for completing the submission form is June 2, 2014, however we will not need running code until the morning of June 4, 2014.
