Data Sets & Models

There are many sources of geospatial-referenced data. The Swiss Open Data portal provides access to 2,100 data sets, of which nearly 100 pertain to the "territory and environment" category.

This page offers a curated resource of locally-relevant data sets we have selected for use by developers. By concentrating one of the required ingredients for mobile location-based services, we are providing a head start for those who wish to demonstrate their solutions or capabilities in the city of Geneva.

If you do not find what you need, or the format in which you would like it, we encourage you to request data sets from us through this form. Developers are also free to use any data available to test and showcase their capabilities, or to capture new observations (e.g., create 3D models).

Built Environment

If you are interested in developing projects that deal with built environment in Geneva city center, we recommend that you determine if one of the data sets below suits your project needs. Click on the data set name to obtain full description and formats provided. Other formats available upon request.

Data sets provided by the système d'information du territoire à Genève (SITG)

SITG Data Set Name Coverage Accuracy
Digital Terrain Model Entire showcase area 15 cm
Cadastre City area 10 cm
3D Building Models City area 30 cm
Special 3D Buildings See list of buildings 50 cm
Statues General Dufour, Reformation Wall, Pictet de Rochemont Absolute 5 cm – Relative 1 cm
Civil Engineering Structures Bridges and Tunnels 10 cm
Orthophoto (winter) City area 5 cm
Orthophoto (summer) City area 40 cm
Utilities City area 1 m

To request all or any of the above data sets, read and complete this license agreement form

In addition to the 3D above-ground built environment models, there are over 600 data sets available from SITG. The complete catalog of data sets is found here

Any data set can be requested in 400 hectare blocks by completing the on-line request form provided by the SITG or completing the Showcase's SITG license agreement and data set request form. For all data sets managed by the SITG, their terms and conditions apply.

Data sets requested from the Foundation Geneva Tourism & Conventions (FGT&C)

The Geneva city tourism board is operated by the Foundation Geneva Tourism & Conventions. This agency maintains the tourism offices and disseminates information about the city's attractions. The Showcase seeks to obtain data sets in the table below for use by developer projects.

FGT&C Data Set Name Coverage Accuracy
Monuments Entire showcase area
Museums and Cultural Attractions Entire showcase area

Natural Environment

The developer may wish to base new, innovative services on data sets describing the natural environment. We propose sample data described in the tables below.

Data sets provided by the système d'information du territoire à Genève (SITG)

SITG Data Set Name Coverage Accuracy
Digital Terrain Model Entire showcase area 15 cm
Lake Bathymetry Lake area  3 m
Trees Parc des Bastions 1 m

Data sets provided by the MeteoSuisse

The default data sets provided by the MeteoSuisse are for COSMO-2 analysis data from the 11th of each month of the years 2008 – 2013 for each hour of the day (starting 11th of March 2008 and ending 11th March 2014).

In addition, the hourly data for 11 June 2014 will be made available on 10 June 2014 as forecast and 12 June 2014 as analysis.

To obtain the data set proposed, simply complete the Default MeteoSuisse Data Request form
MeteoSuisse Data Set Name Coverage Spatial Resolution
Temperature @ 2m Entire Geneva area 2.2 km
Atmospheric Pressure @ sea level Entire Geneva area 2.2 km
Wind Speed and Direction @10 m Entire Geneva area 2.2 km
Humidity @ 2m Entire Geneva area 2.2 km
Precipitation on the ground Entire Geneva area 2.2 km

Any other data set requests are invited via the MeteoSuisse Customized Data request form.

Data sets requested of Swisstopo

The Swiss Federal Office of Topography also provides digital data of the city of Geneva and the entire country. This data is already available on mobile platforms, including with Augmented Reality view.

A resource with 3D buildings is being requested on behalf of this project.  A sample of the file type is available for download from this page. The 3D Swiss Terrain map, published by Swisstopo, may also be of interest.

Additional Resources

Although it is not in 3D, there is also the Open Street Map data for Geneva. You can obtain it here.
